Case Two: Rectification of the Guqiao River Discharge Outlet in Qingshanhu District

(1) Basic Information

The sewage outlet into the river at Guoqiao in Qingshanhu District, Nanchang City, was originally the sewage outlet of the flood control and drainage station of Jiangxi Guoqiao Industrial Co., LTD., and it was responsible for flood control and drainage in the company and its surrounding areas.

(II) Causes of the problem

Due to the incomplete separation of rainwater and sewage in the early years, sewage would be discharged into the southern branch of the Ganjiang River through this outlet, posing a significant threat to the water quality of the southern branch of the Ganjiang River.

(3) Rectification Measures

In 2019, Qingshanhu District invested over 110,000 yuan to complete the sewage interception project of the sewage outlet of Jiangxi Guoqiao Industrial Co., Ltd. in order to thoroughly address the potential risks brought about by the sewage outlet of Guoqiao River. After the completion of the project, the sewage of Jiangxi Guoqiao Industrial Co., Ltd. was lifted through the sewage lift station and incorporated into the surrounding municipal sewage network, eventually entering the Qingshan Lake Sewage Treatment Plant for treatment, thus solving the problem of direct discharge of sewage from this outlet. With the launch of the three-year urban water environment improvement campaign initiated by Qingshanhu District in 2022, Jiangxi Guoqiao Industrial Co., Ltd. has also been included in the scope of drainage unit improvement. For this reason, the Qingshanhu Ecological Environment Bureau, in conjunction with the Qingshan Road Sub-district Office, has repeatedly visited the enterprise to promote, coordinate and carry out drainage unit renovation. The enterprise has also voluntarily invested over 400,000 yuan in the drainage unit renovation project. After the rainwater and sewage are thoroughly separated, this discharge outlet will lose its function of flood control and drainage, and will eventually be shut down and sealed.

(4) Effectiveness of Rectification

After the discharge outlet was completely blocked, no sewage was discharged into the Qingshan Lake section of the southern branch of the Ganjiang River, which greatly improved the water quality of the southern branch of the Ganjiang River. Especially at the section downstream of the discharge outlet in Beili Village, Gaoxin, the average annual water quality reached Class II in 2022, which was better than the Class III water quality assessment target. Especially in the area where the discharge outlet is located, the ecological comprehensive management project of the eastern bank of the Ganjiang River is currently being implemented. After the project is completed, this area will be transformed into a green ecological corridor with clear water and green banks that benefits the people, becoming another great place for citizens to relax and sightsee.
